Young athlete wins first gold medal

SET to follow in his brother’s record breaking footsteps, Samuel Ramos has won his first gymnastic gold medal

The 7-year-old who attends Lound Infant school in Chapeltown competed in a tumbling gymnastic competition in Durham last week, landing first place.

However, as official British championship rules usually only apply to children starting from age nine, Samuel had to get special permission to perform at the age of just seven years old, making him the youngest competitor in Britain to compete at national level and win a gold medal.

Samuel Ramos is the younger brother to Guinness World Record holder Jordan Ramos and is undoubtedly keeping up the family tradition!

Commenting on his success, Samuel said: “I’m very happy I won the competition and I want to be just like my big brother Jordan."

After his success at the weekend, Samuel's mum and dad are now hoping that he'll be allowed to go on to enter bigger and better tournaments like the British championships being held at the NIA in Birmingham early next year.

Samuel's mum, Anita, told Look Local: “Samuel is super, super talented for his young years. He's been ready to compete for along time now, but we couldn't ever get permission because he was so young and rules state you have to be at least nine to start competing at national level.

“Samuel's father and I were delighted when we were told by Wakefield Gymnastic Club that he'd been given special permission to enter the competition and then when he went on to win, it was amazing!

“Samuel loved every minute of the competition and performed his gymnastic moves with a big smile on his face.

"Samuel has the talent and it's fantastic that he's finally been given an opportunity to shine at such a young age."

Samuel's father, Marcelo, added: “With any competitive sport I agree that there needs to be rules and regulations.

"Having said that, if you have a child who is extremely talented, they shouldn't be held back because of their age.”

Samuel has already made national headlines with his incredible athletic skills, and although he may be too young to compete in 2012, it’s likely that this won’t be the last we hear of this young athlete.
